Workforce Development
Architecture students from Carnegie Mellon University join Pittsburgh Water for an immersive experience at our Water Treatment Plant.
Pittsburgh Water is dedicated to developing our current employees and creating a diverse pipeline of future employees through community partnerships and workforce development initiatives. In 2025, we reached a workforce development milestone, launching the first approved apprenticeship program at Pittsburgh Water: the Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship Program. The program, developed in partnership with IUOE Local 95, offers a paid path towards becoming a certified water operator, complete with on-the-job training and classroom instruction. In total, to help drive our workforce development initiatives, our HR team hosted or attended 30 career fairs, industry panels, and workshops over the course of last year.
At BuildOn 2025, Pittsburgh Water employees took students on a behind-the-scenes look at our daily work and shared personal stories about their career paths, sparking curiosity and conversations about the many opportunities in the water industry.
Of note is our participation in BuildOn 2025; held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, this event gave us the opportunity to introduce over 3,500 students from 10 counties to our work and career opportunities with Pittsburgh Water.
People News & the Employee Experience
The extent to which our more than 400 dedicated employees feel supported, engaged, and fulfilled at work has a direct impact on our ability to meet our goals and serve you. We strive to create a workplace culture that supports our employees in their professional development, fosters and preserves a culture of respect and inclusion, and encourages accountability and high performance for all Pittsburgh Water employees.
In 2025, we conducted an inaugural organization-wide employee engagement survey. Among other factors, the survey measured how connected employees feel to their work and revealed some common themes regarding additional ways to engage our team. The survey results also tell us that
most of our team feel proud of their work, see its impact on our customers, and believe their teams collaborate and support one another. That’s something to celebrate. At the same time, we know there’s always room to improve.
In 2026, our focus will be on transparency, collaboration, and leadership development, ensuring that every employee feels informed, included, and supported in their day-to-day work. We will use constructive feedback gained through this survey to help inform these actions moving forward.
